Peter Geldart, a long-time collector of antique maps of Asia, is a director of the Philippine Map Collectors Society (PHIMCOS). He recently curated and wrote the catalogue for Mapping the Philippine Seas, an exhibition of 166 charts of the Philippine archipelago from the early 16th to the 19th centuries.
He is also editor of the PHIMCOS journal, and is now helping the HKMM to  catalogue a collection of maps and charts of China and Hong Kong lent to the museum by Gordian Gaeta. Among the chosen maps in the collection is a chart by Alexander Dalrymple which is the first to show and name Hong Kong island.

Trip to Guangdong Province

The first-ever overseas excursion organised by HKMM was held on 30 June - 1 July 2015. A two-day exploration to the western arm of the Guangdong province - Yangjiang, and Guangzhou - participating Friends of HKMM members and HKMM staff visited two museums. On Day 1, the group of 16 visited the iconic Maritime Silk Road Museum of Guangdong, situated on the Hailing Island along the Ten Miles Silver Beach, where Dr. Bill Jeffery provided an overview of the shipwreck Nanhai No. 1. On Day 2 the group travelled to Guangzhou to the Guangdong Museum. Overnight accommodations were arranged at the resort-like hotel on the Hailing Island.

HKMM Friends Cover

Why Join Friends of HKMM?

The Hong Kong Maritime Museum (HKMM) story began when it was incorporated in 2003. This decision was taken by a group of people who recognised the need to preserve the rich maritime heritage of Hong Kong and provide an environment where visitors can share a common passion for ships and the sea.

As an independent registered Hong Kong charity, HKMM offers a wide range of educational activities and public programmes coupled with permanent and special exhibitions for visitors from all walks of life.  The assistance of our Friends and volunteers are important for the Museum to provide ongoing learning opportunities to thousands of local school children, host world-class exhibitions and purchase cultural heritage objects that support the mission of the Museum.

Friends of HKMM hosts exclusive events including evening drinks, private guided tours, expeditions, seminars, talks and more.  When you become a Friend of HKMM, in addition to enjoying a wealth of benefits, you will be contributing to the fundraising efforts of the organisation and become a Museum ambassador.  The Friends group operates with the assistance of Museum’s staff to help identify priorities in public programming for the benefit of the underprivileged in Hong Kong.
